WHISTLE GROVE: The National Steamboat Monument
2002, Sawyer Point Bicentennial Commons,
Cincinatti, OH
Janney’s Whistle Grove is the winner of a national competition by the Tall Stacks Commission to create a site-specific artwork commemorating the great Steamboat Age and its role in the nation’s history. The Cincinnati work, to be installed on the Ohio riverbank, is composed of 24 ten foot tall columns, 14 inches in diameter. Moving among the columns, a person triggers a burst of steam from the top of the column and a rich “score” of environmental sounds, acoustical instruments and historical text. At night, each column will be lit- illuminating the participants in the grove and the steam jets for dramatic visual effect.
